Robben Island

Several months ago we visited Robben Island, South Africa's most notorious political prison. Here are some pictures from the trip.

Robben Island from the top of Table Mountain

Steaming away from Cape Town, and Table Mountain (covered in cloud), in the ferry.

Arriving on the Island

Haunting images of the first detainees arriving at Robben Island greet you at the harbour.

A former detainee takes you on a tour of the prison and describes life there.

A picture of the last detainees to leave the island in the 1990's.

Entering the prison

Nelson Mandela's cell, where he spent 18 years.

The courtyard where Mandela and the other political prisoners exercised. The walls are too high to permit a view of Table Mountain, just 10 kilometers away, and one of the grandest sights in the world.

Leaving the prison in the dark, for the boat ride home, added to the somber, reflective atmosphere.
